Today is July 8. 2008. It's been many, many months since this was updated. There have been numerous activities since last updated.
During '07-'08 13 teens attended LGS. The ages ranged from 10 to 16. Grade improvement and attitude improvement was evident in each teen. One most outstanding improvement was a 14 year old who tested at grade 5 level. He was turned off to school. He entered around March 1. When tested at the end of May he had improved to GRADE 9 of above in ALL areas - Reading, Math, Language Arts, Vocab, Spelling. Also he has been one of the hardest workers in the LGS Job-Training program. He has been "job-shadowing" with Mike Lehe and Bruce Blume. He is pleasant to be around. He will probably be part of a trip to DC and also to Nashville (Grand 'Ol Opry) this fall.
[Always a huge thanks to son-in-law Dave Black for quickly (1 evening) organizing this website. He's a computer genius!!!! He's a scuba diver, deer hunter, married to Laura and they have 2 of our grandkids - Mandy and Aaron.]
- Some comments I've heard lately have been about a so-called Jail School. (that's really NOT my LGS even though some may think it is.) Some have said that they are very "thankful" for what I try to do at the school. I am constantly trying to build good "MEMORIES" that can be of PRACTICAL use for the future (academic education, vocational (hands-on) education, family-based activities, etc.) That's why we "do" Nashville, fishing trips, DC, Boston, farm work, sports, etc.
- At-risk kids can be identified very, very early. At LGS the children can return to public school when they achieve certain educational levels and are adjusted enough to think for themselves and survive in this tough world! They may choose to continue with LGS and ultimately attend IVY Tech or a trade school. We can prevent out teens from going to jail.
CHURCHES - This school is for teens in the White County area. I deal with kids who have been "given up on" and also who have given up on themselves. Many see NO hope for the future. Could you, as a "small" church become a $10 per WEEK supporter? If you are a member of a "LARGE" church, could you do $20 or more per week? Use this as a part of your local "Missions" or "Outreach" program. You are welcome at ANY time to visit school in the Fairnet building across the street east of McDonald's in Monticello. When sending a check mail it to Life GAPS School - Jerry Cook; 4064 N 750 W; Wolcott, IN 47995.
Another GREAT BIG thanks to the Wolcott Methodist Church for their monthly contribution. Huge!!
-I have jobs available in my "Work-Study" program. However, first I must teach the teens "HOW to WORK". Then I have some selected locations where the teen can work (if he passes my "How to Work") However, most teens do NOT know how to work..... the foremost thing on their mind is getting money in their hands. That's why every previous teen that I've helped has failed AND, therefore, now I require that they must complete my work study program BEFORE they get to work in the community. Interested?
